Baseball Ends Regular Season with Loss to Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Adrian College baseball team traveled to Kalamazoo on Sunday to wrap up the regular season. After splitting during Saturday's doubleheader, Kalamazoo went on to win the series with an 11-4 victory on Sunday. With the season over, Kalamazoo and Adrian have officially secured a rematch in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday.

Kalamazoo struck first on Sunday with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to lead 2-0. The offenses were quiet until the sixth when Adrian got on the board. Gus Weaks hit a RBI single up the middle to score Easton Rogers and make it 2-1. Kalamazoo responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning on a RBI triple, two RBI singles, and a RBI double to make it 6-1. In the seventh, Kevin Cardentey found his way to third after starting the inning with a double followed by a fielding error, and later scoring on a wild pitch.

The Hornets scored again on a bases clearing triple from the leadoff hitter to extend the lead to 9-2. In the eighth, Kalamazoo kept things roll after scoring on a wild pitch and a ground out with a runner on third. In the ninth, the Bulldogs got a pair with a double from Anthony Mannarino and a bases loaded walk to Ben Sullivan, but it wasn't enough as Kalamazoo came away with the 11-4 win.

Griffin Firestine got the start lasting two innings allowing three hits with no runs scored. Garrett Lussier was first out of the pen allowing two runs on one hit with a pair of walks to record the loss. The Bulldogs finished the day by committee throwing seven more pitchers out of the bullpen.

The MIAA Tournament begins on Wedensday with the first round games taking place at the No. 1 and No. 2 seed locations. Adrian locked up the No. 3 seed and will travel to Kalamazoo on Wednesday for the opening round before finishing the double elimination tournament at No. 1 Hope College. The rematch between Adrian and Kalamazoo is slated to take place on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
