LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Adrian College Men's ACHA Division 1 hockey team traveled to Lynchburg, Virginia over the weekend where they battled with the No. 5 Liberty University Flames, winning 3-1 on Friday night, and then clawing back to tie the Flames 3-3 in regulation, before falling in a shootout on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs came out hot in their opening game against the Flames, receiving two goals from sophomore forward
Sebastian Smith in the first period. Defenseman
Brodie Thornton would then score on the power-play to open the second frame, before Liberty would add one to make it 3-1 for Adrian after two periods of play. A scoreless third led to a Bulldog win, thanks to 37 saves from goaltender
Noah Decottignies.
To close out the series on Saturday, the Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 early in the game. It wasn't until the last minute of the second period that Adrian found the back of the net, thanks to
Sebastian Smith's 16
th goal of the season to make it 2-1 heading into the final frame. The Bulldogs would then tie it at two, with a power-play goal from
Connor Smith early in the third, before the Flames would add another to make it 3-2 with twelve minutes remaining. Adrian would once again claw back to tie it up on senior forward
Sam Spaedt's 22
nd of the season with just five minutes to go, securing the tie and forcing overtime. After a scoreless overtime, which included a strong Bulldog penalty kill, the Flames would find the win in the shootout. Adrian had out shot Liberty by a 51-31 score, while Decottignies made 28 saves in the effort.
The No. 2 MD1 Bulldogs are back in action this Thursday and Friday night as they welcome Duquesne University to the Arrington Ice Arena. Thursday's puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM, followed by Friday's at 7:00 PM. The Bulldogs will also be honoring their Senior Class of 2023 with a pre-game and post-game ceremony at Friday night's contest.
