ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College baseball team took the MIAA opener on Thursday afternoon at Nicolay Field defeating the Calvin University Knights 9-3.
Daniel Gutierrez had a solid pitching performance for the Bulldogs on Thursday throwing six innings allowing three runs with eight strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- AJ Miranda drove in the first run of the game on an RBI double down the left field line.
- Later in the inning, Easton Rogers reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded scoring Adrian's second run of the game. Zach Wade grounded out in the next at bat driving in a run to lead 3-0.
- In the second inning, Ryan Davis singled in a run to make it 4-0 which was followed by an RBI single from Edward Wagner to lead 5-0.
- In the fourth inning, AJ Miranda hit into a double play with the bases loaded but it scored another run to lead 6-0 followed by an RBI single from Wagner to lead 7-0.
- Calvin scored three in the sixth on a pair of RBI singles and a fielder's choice.
- Wagner singled in a pair in the sixth to extend the Adrian lead to 9-3.
- Gutierrez picked up his third win of the season with six innings pitched with eight strikeouts.
- Gage Ricker threw two innings in relief not allowing a base runner while Jakob Charles had a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
- The Calvin pitching staff struggled with control walking three Bulldogs and hitting seven batters.
- Wagner led the Adrian offense finishing 3-for-4 with four RBIs on the day.
