Softball Team Continues to Roll After Sweep Over Anderson

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College softball team swept Anderson with a pair of 8-0 wins Monday afternoon, marking the fifth most wins in program history (24). In game one, Paige Stein led all players with three hits. In the second game of Monday's double header, Macee Schang recorded five strikeouts enroute to her 14th win of the season. 


GAME ONE 

After a scoreless first inning for both teams in game one, the Bulldogs would take the lead in the bottom of the second after a three run inning. To start up the offense, Maggie Leveille singled to center field. Stein would follow up Leveille's hit with a triple up right, to drive in Leveille. Up next, Meghan Lupu doubled to right center and drove in Stein. To end the third inning scoring, Makenzi Johnson grounded out and advanced Lupu to third. Later during the next at bat, Flesia Borck doubled to left field and scored Lupu to propel the Bulldogs to a 3-0 lead. 

Adrian College would tack on another run during the bottom of the third inning to lead 4-0. After Leveille reached on a fielder's choice, Stein doubled to right field and drove in Leveille. In the fourth inning, the Bulldogs continued to score against Anderson and improved their lead to 6-0. During the inning, Johnson and Borck singled to put pressure on the Anderson defense. After a groundout by Karson Bagelmann and a fly out by Brynn McKay. Borck would advance to third and Johnson would score. Eventually, Borck would score Adrian College's sixth run of the inning after advancing home on a wild pitch. Later in the bottom of the fifth inning, Johnson singled up the middle and drove in Shaw to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 advantage over Anderson. The Bulldogs would score their final run after Russell singled up the middle to score Bagelmann during the bottom of the sixth inning. 
 

GAME TWO 

The Bulldogs would use their momentum from game one to open the second game Monday with a 6-0 lead after the first inning. During the first inning of play, Hailey DeChalk doubled to left field and scored Bagelmann to give Adrian College the early lead at 2-0. Throughout the first inning, the Bulldogs recorded seven hits, which resulted in their six runs. Later in the inning, Bagelmann singled to right field and scored Genna Marasco and Stein to push their lead to six.  

During the second with their six-run lead, Adrian College continued their offensive attack. The inning would begin with a DeChalk single and a walk by Russell. After Leveille reached first on a fielding error by Anderson, Johnson singled to shortstop, advancing Leveille and scoring Russell on the play to give Adrian an 8-0 lead. Shang's five strikeouts and one hit allowed would propel the Bulldogs to a comfortable 8-0 victory Monday afternoon.  

Historical Notes 

After the sweep over Anderson Monday, the 2023 softball team has recorded the fifth-most program wins in a single season with 24 and counting. The last time the softball team would achieve such a feat was during the 2011 season when the Bulldogs would win a program-best 35 games. Additionally, pitcher Abbi Patton improved her win total to 10 on the season, moving two wins from a tie for the 10th most single-season wins in program history with Brooke Stewert.

The Bulldogs will face Calvin University for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 24, at AC Softball Field. Game one will start at 3:00 PM and game two will follow at 5:00 PM.
