ALMA, Mich. – The Adrian College softball team was swept by Alma on Saturday. The Bulldogs would drop game one 7-1 and lose 6-2 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. In games one and two, six Bulldogs would each record a hit.
Game One
The Bulldogs combined for six hits with one run scored in game one's loss Saturday. During the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs would score their lone run of the game after Ava Ferrarelli reached first on an error by Alma's third baseman. During the play, Paige Stein advanced to second and Hailey DeChalk scored, awarding Ferrarelli an RBI. In game one, Karson Bagelmann, Brynn McKay, Genna Marasco, Flesia Borck, DeChalk, and Stein recorded one hit each. Despite the wide distribution in offense from Adrian College, the Scotts would take game one.
Game Two
In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Bulldogs would combine for seven hits and were led by Bagelmann, Mckay, and Marasco, who were responsible for six of the seven. Adrian College was unable to put any runs on the board until the bottom of the seventh inning, in which they found themselves in a 6-0 deficit. To begin the bottom of the seventh, Marasco would ignite the offense with a single to right field. Bagelmann would follow after she tripled down the right infield line, which scored Marasco in the process. The offensive attack would continue after McKay hit a sacrifice fly, which scored Bagelmann and pulled the Bulldogs within four with the score 6-2. The last batter in the inning to reach base was DeChalk, after she was hit by a pitch. The rally would end after Alma capitalized on a ground ball to collect the last out of the game.
MIAA Tournament Picture
After today's series loss against Alma, the Bulldogs take a 8-6 conference record into the final week of the regular season. Currently, the Adrian College softball team is one game ahead of Hope College and Kalamazoo in the race for the fourth MIAA tournament seed. Hope and Kalamazoo have four total conference games remaining in comparison to Adrian's two. Since Adrian owns the tiebreaker over Kalamazoo, a double header sweep over Hope College would clinch an MIAA Tournament for the Bulldogs. As of today, the Bulldogs potentially have a shot at the third seed, as Alma has four MIAA games remaining compared to Adrian's two.
Historical Notes
Bagelmann's three combined hits in games one and two moved her into sole possession of the fifth most hits in program history in a single season with 55 and counting. The last time a member of the Adrian College softball team recorded at least 55 or more hits in a season was Krissy Adams in 2011. Adams would set the current program record for the most hits in a season in 2011 with 63.
