ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3 Adrian College Women's ACHA Division 1 hockey team took on No. 10 Michigan-Dearborn and No. 6 Michigan this past week, collecting two wins and a loss to their in-state opponents.
The Bulldogs opened their week with a road game at Michigan-Dearborn on Thursday night, where they eventually fell to the Wolverines by a score of 2-1. Heading into the third period, the score was knotted at one.
Macy Piche scored the lone goal for Adrian on a tally assisted by
Ashlynn Stitt and
Allison Shaw in the second period, but the Wolverines would solve Adrian goaltender
Chloe Burt right after and then again midway through the third period to secure the victory. The Bulldogs out-shot the Wolverines 40-22 but the No. 3-ranked team came up short to open the week. Burt made 20 saves for Adrian in the defeat.
The Bulldogs would have the day off on Friday before they met with Michigan at the Arrington Ice Arena on Saturday night for the first half of a home and home CCWHA conference series. The Bulldogs would bounce back, shutting out the Wolverines, 2-0, thanks to a stellar performance in net from Burt who turned aside 15 shots for her fifth shutout of the season. Stitt and Piche provided the offense in the low-scoring affair.
The two teams then met at the Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor on Sunday for the second game of the series and last of the weekend for the Bulldogs. Adrian would once again solve Michigan, coming out on top in 3-1 fashion. The Bulldogs would go down 1-0 early in the game, and be held scoreless until the final four minutes of the contest when
Neleh Wood found the back of the net to make it 1-1. Shortly after that, captain
Tess McKerrow potted the eventual game winner on the power play to go up 2-1 with just under three minutes remaining. Piche would add an empty netter to seal it for the road team, improving the Bulldogs to 18-5-1 on the season. Burt was crucial in the win once again as she stopped 18 of 19 shots on net for her eleventh win of the 2023-2024 season.
The No. 3 WD1 Bulldogs will next be in action on February 2-3 when they take on No. 8 Indiana Tech in a home and home CCWHA conference bout. The puck will drop on Friday at 3:00 PM at the Arrington Ice Arena and then at 2:30 PM on Saturday in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
