ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College Men's ACHA Division 3 hockey team got off to a hot start to the 2024-25 season with a 6-0 blanking of Trine University at the Arrington Ice Arena on Sunday.
Bulldog forward,
Will Gilberg, opened the scoring for Adrian in the first period, off a passing play from
Owen Barber and
Henry Darnell. During the second period, the Bulldogs took control even more as sophomore forward,
James Schmidt, found the back of the net on a beautiful short-handed play. Shortly after, Schmidt would add another goal off a rebound from
Joseph Plaster to make it 3-0 after two periods.
About mid-way through the third frame, Barber sniped one past the Trine goaltender for his first career college tally.
Anthony Alfonsi added another in the latter-half of the third on the powerplay to make it 5-0, before Schmidt found himself on a short-handed breakaway, sliding one five-hole on the Trine tender to make it 6-0 and complete the hat-trick with under three minutes to play. Freshman goalie,
Aidan Knox, was lights-out for the Bulldogs in goal, making 29 saves for his first win and shutout of his college career. The victory also marked new Head Coach
Brett Siewertsen '21's first win with the team.
The MD3 Bulldogs return to the ice next weekend when they take on Ferris State University in a home-and-home series. Friday, the Bulldogs from both teams will face-off in Big Rapids at 7:30 PM, and then at the Arrington Ice Arena at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
