ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College Men's ACHA Division 2 hockey team hosted Sault College for two games at the Arrington Ice Arena this past weekend, closing out their first semester schedule. The Bulldogs fell to the Cougars in nail-biter game one, before sparking a comeback victory in game two to split the series.
Saturday night, the Bulldogs and Cougars faced off just before 8:00 PM at the AIA, in a spirited contest between two Central Region challengers. Going into the weekend, Sault College ranked No. 7 in the Central Region, while Adrian came in at No. 13. In game one, Adrian and Sault battled through a scoreless first period, before Bulldog
Jack Waldo scored his seventh of the season on the man-advantage. Sault answered right back, and then
Gabe Vijuk tallied on the power-play for the home team, his sixth of the season to move the Bulldogs ahead, 2-1, after two periods of play. A third period push resulted in the Cougars tallying twice more to overtake the Bulldogs, who could not respond, holding off for the 3-2 win over Adrian to open the series. Adrian goaltender,
Alexander Herman, stopped 32 of the 35 pucks he faced in defeat.
After a quick turnaround for a 1:00 PM puck drop on Sunday, Adrian shot out for revenge in hopes of splitting the series going into Christmas break. Sault opened the scoring just sixteen seconds into the game and added another before Adrian's Waldo scored late in the opening frame, leaving the score 2-1 after one. A single goal from Sault with less than ten seconds left in the middle frame set up the Bulldogs for what would be a remarkable comeback in the third and final frame. Down 3-1, the Bulldogs tacked on five goals in the third, including two empty netters to seal the comeback victory.
Willie McGuire,
Greg Obrycki, and
Bazl Cook tallied the first three goals of the period, aiding the Bulldogs in their blanking of the Cougars to close the game. Obrycki and
Brayden Morris were the scorers into the yawning cage late in the game, both while shorthanded. Herman backstopped the Bulldogs for the second straight night, this time turning aside 30 of 33 shots for his fourth win of the season. The win also marked Head CoachÂ
Brennon Wachter's 50th win with the MD2 Bulldogs.
The MD2 Bulldogs close the Fall semester with a 12-3-1 record and currently sit 13th in the Central Region. The team will return to the ice on January 16 at Purdue University Northwest.
