LYNCHBURG, VA. -- The No. 3 Adrian College Women's ACHA Division 1 hockey team took on No. 2 Liberty University in Virginia this weekend, coming out with their first victory over the Flames since the 2018-19 season and a tie to close the series.
Game one on Friday night at the LaHaye Ice Center needed overtime to decide a winner, where it was the Bulldogs who came out on top with a crucial victory. Adrian and Liberty opened the game with one goal each in the first frame, with
Neleh Wood finding her sixth of the season for the Bulldogs. In the midst of the second period, the Bulldogs and Flames would trade two goals each, with Adrian goals coming from
Tess McKerrow and
Tyla Turnbull to make it 3-3 after two. A scoreless third period resulted in the need for an extra frame, which resulted in a
Macy Piche tally to give the road team the 4-3 victory and their first over Liberty in nearly six years. Adrian goaltender,
Chloe Burt, managed 25 saves in the game, backstopping her team to the win.
The Bulldogs looked for the sweep on Saturday afternoon, and came close as the contest sat still at 1-1 through regulation. McKerrow potted her eighth of the season on a highlight reel effort in the second period to take the Bulldogs to overtime for the second straight night. After a null extra frame, the game ended in a tie. Burt was remarkable once again, making 28 saves for the Bulldogs and earning the tie in goal.
The WD1 Bulldogs head into their last weekend of regular season play with three CCWHA conference games later this week. First, the Bulldogs will take on No. 9 Michigan-Dearborn on Thursday, February 15 at 7:30 PM at the Arrington Ice Arena, followed by a home and home with Michigan State on Friday in East Lansing at 6:35 PM and Sunday at the Arrington Ice Arena at 1:00 PM.
