ANGOLA, Ind. – Friday held dryer conditions for the MIAA Softball Tournament as the Adrian College softball team traveled to Trine University. The Bulldogs entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed where they took on No. 1 Trine University. After a 1-0 loss to the Thunder, Adrian faced No. 3 Hope College where they dropped the contest 5-2 forcing the season to end for the Bulldogs.
Trine took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single. Earlier in the inning, the Thunder reached base on an Adrian fielding error allowing the runner to advance to scoring position before scoring later in the inning. The Bulldogs struggled at the plate reaching base twice during the game on a first inning single from
Maggie Leveille and a fourth inning walk to Taylor Gehardt.
Macee Schang started on the mound for Adrian where she threw four innings allowing one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Abbi Patton pitched two innings in relief in game one where she allowed no runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
After Hope College lost to Calvin University earlier in the day, the Bulldogs faced the Dutch in the first elimination game of the tournament. The Bulldogs came out scoring putting two runs on the board in the top of the first.
Hailey DeChalk doubled in a run which was followed by an RBI single from
Peyton Russell. Adrian held Hope scoreless until the fifth where the Dutch had a four-run inning before adding another run in the sixth to lead 5-2 and win the game.
The Bulldogs earned four hits in game two of the day with two coming from Russell and one from DeChalk and
Meghan Lupu. Schang pitched 4.2 innings allowing two runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts while Patton threw 1.1 innings allowing three runs on two hits with a strikeout.
Adrian's season comes to an end after posting a 28-12 record on the year. The NCAA will hold the Division III Softball NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Monday, May 13 at 11:00 AM to determine the national postseason bracket.
