ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College ACHA Men's Division 1 hockey team hosted Syracuse University over the weekend for a two-game series. The No. 2 Bulldogs opened with a dominant 10-4 victory on Friday night before settling for a 2-2 tie and a shootout loss on Saturday.
Adrian wasted no time getting on the board Friday as Justin Jamer scored just 11 seconds into the game. Sebastian Smith and Blake Wideman extended the lead before Syracuse tallied its first goal. Caleb Minns added one with 11 seconds left in the period to make it 4-1 after the first.
The Bulldogs kept rolling in the second, getting goals from Keegan DeCaluwe, Eli Reimer, and Matteo Turrin to stretch the lead to 7-1. Syracuse responded with three unanswered goals, but Adrian sealed the win with tallies from Smith (his second of the game), Alex Schaumburger, and another from Reimer in the third for the 10-4 final.
Cale Strasky led the way with four assists, while Turrin, Jamer, and DeCaluwe each recorded three points. Goaltender Peyton Trzaska earned the win with 22 saves.
Saturday's matchup was a tighter battle. Syracuse opened the scoring in the first period before Griffin Zaske and Wideman found the back of the net in the second to give Adrian a 2-1 lead. The Orange answered late in the frame to tie the game at 2-2, where it would remain through regulation and overtime. In the shootout, Dylan Gajewski and DeCaluwe converted for the Bulldogs, but Syracuse scored three times to take the extra point.
Dylan Eliason got the start in net for Adrian, making 27 saves.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, October 23, when they host Ohio University at 7:30 p.m. at the AIA. The Bulldogs will then travel to Athens on Friday October 24 to close the series with the Bobcats.
