ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College Men's ACHA Division 3 hockey team split in a hard fought series against Aquinas, with a 4-3 loss Friday evening and a 7-6 win Sunday afternoon.
Despite outshooting Aquinas by a wide 71–37 margin, Adrian came up just short in a 4–3 loss on Friday night. Ryan Rainey in goal for the Bulldogs collecting 33 saves. The Saints jumped ahead early, scoring twice in the opening period to make it 2–0 after one. The Bulldogs cut into the lead early in the second period when Anthony Alfonsi buried his fifth goal of the season off a feed from Henry Darnell. The Bulldogs continued to press, but Aquinas goaltending held strong to maintain a 2–1 lead heading into the final frame. The third period saw an offensive burst from both sides. Maximilian Schadel countered with a pair of goals of his own, both assisted by Solyom Andras and Dmitrii Sergeev, one coming on the power play. Despite a late push and a 21-shot third period, the Bulldogs couldn't find the equalizer as Aquinas held on for the 4–3 win.
Both teams came out firing, with Andras opening the scoring early in the first period, and after Aquinas answered with two quick tallies, Andras struck again to even the score 2–2 heading into the intermission. The second period turned into an offensive battle, with goals coming from both sides. Devin Bennett and Maxim Sorel each found the back of the net for Adrian, while Aquinas responded with a pair of goals. After forty minutes, the teams were locked in a 4–4 tie. The Bulldogs took control in the third period when Gavin Daum and Sorel scored key goals to give Adrian the edge, and despite a late push from Aquinas, Sergeev's tally at 16:17 sealed the win. Goaltender Peyton Lenger picked up the victory between the pipes, turning aside 10 of 16 shots in a game dominated by Adrian's offensive pressure. The Bulldogs outshot Aquinas 29–16.
