ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College MD3 hockey team hosted No. 17 Western Michigan University Friday night and traveled to Western Michigan Saturday evening. The Bulldogs earned a solid 4–2 win over the Stallions on Friday night, and fell 3-2 Saturday evening.
After a quiet opening frame on Friday, Western Michigan struck first early in the second period, but the Bulldogs responded quickly. Maximilian Schadel evened the score at 1–1 with help from Solyom Andras and Dmitrii Sergeev before Andras gave Adrian the lead just three minutes later on the power play, assisted by Schadel and Nolan Doersch. In the third, the Stallions even on the power play, but Adrian answered back immediately. Andras notched his second goal of the night just 49 seconds later, reclaiming the lead for the Bulldogs. Henry Darnell sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final minute to cap off a 4–2 victory. Goaltender Ryan Rainey was a force in net, turning away 42 of 44 shots faced. Schadel and Sergeev each picked up multi-point games, while Adrian's special teams came up big, going 1-for-6 on the power play and limiting WMU to a single power play goal on three chances.
On Saturday at Western Michigan, a scoreless first period, Western Michigan struck twice in the second. Adrian responded late in the frame when Anthony Alfonsi capitalized at 19:10, assisted by Henry Darnell and James Schmidt, cutting the lead to 2–1. The Bulldogs tied it early in the third as Luke Miller netted his first of the season from Schmidt at 9:13, but Western Michigan regained the lead at 12:25, which stood as the game-winner. Adrian goaltender Ryan Rainey made 26 saves on 29 shots in the loss, playing 58:20 before being pulled for the extra attacker.
The MD3 team sits at a 6-4 record and will be back in action Saturday at Trine and Sunday hosting Trine. These two teams met earlier in the season with two dominate victories from Adrian.
