ADRIAN, Mich. -- The No. 2 Adrian College Women's ACHA Division 1 hockey team hosted No. 11 Arizona State University at the Arrington Ice Arena on a cold snowy night on Wednesday, skating to a 4-2 victory in the team's final home game of the season.
Adrian welcomed an Arizona State team that they previously met last season in the first round of the ACHA national tournament, and for only the second time in history. Adrian had won both previous match-ups by 5-0 scores.
The Bulldogs and Sun Devils battled back and forth in an exciting but scoreless first frame, before the Bulldogs opened the scoring with two goals of their own in the second period.
Neleh Wood and
Genessie Williams (PPG) knotted goals, while
Tess McKerrow set-up both tallies with primary assists. Arizona State added a late powerplay goal in the dying seconds of period two to bring the score to 2-1 heading into the final stanza.
Adrian quickly exploded for two goals to open period three thanks to
Ashlynn Stitt and
Kali Foerster, with McKerrow grabbing another assist. Later on, the Sun Devils capitalized on a turnover, scoring a breakaway goal to close the gap, but
Rieley Jessie-Gerelli continued to hold down the fort for Adrian in goal, fending off ASU and holding on for the 4-2 win. Stitt,
Tyla Turnbull,
Amelia Smolinski, and
Hailey Wiltshire each grabbed helpers in the win as well.
With the win, the Bulldogs extend their hot-streak to seven games as they prepare for two enormous contests at No. 1 Liberty University this weekend. Catch the WD1 Bulldogs in action this Friday and Saturday at 1:30 PM.
Senior forward and Team Captain,
Tess McKerrow, joined us for a post-game interview on Wednesday to discuss the win, her four years as a Bulldog, and how her team is preparing for the final two games of the regular season.
