ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College baseball team hosted Kalamazoo College at Nicolay Field on Friday afternoon where the Bulldogs handled the Hornets with a 4-1 victory in the opening game of the three-game series.
The Hornets struck first in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly, grabbing an early 1-0 lead. Adrian wasted no time responding in the bottom half. With the bases loaded,
Jake Burns took one for the team, getting hit by a pitch to bring home
Nic Bruder and tie things up.
Linken Hayward stepped into the box and laced a clutch single into left field, driving in
David Kedrow and
Ryan Davis to give Adrian a 3-1 lead.
Both teams had opportunities in the middle innings, but neither could break through in the fifth, sixth, or seventh. In the bottom of the eighth,
Ryan Davis added some insurance, ripping a single through the left side to score
Joe Casale and extend Adrian's lead 4-1.
From there, the pitching took over. Starter
Jaxon Clark was dominant, going seven strong innings, allowing just four hits and striking out four. Davis returned to the mound to close things out, slamming the door with two no-hit innings and a strikeout to earn the save to claim the victory in the first game of the series.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday, April 12 where they will travel to Kalamazoo and play a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
