GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Adrian College ACHA Men's Division 1 hockey team is once again GL6 Tournament Champion. The Bulldogs defeated Calvin University, 4-1, in a rematch of last season's GL6 Conference Tournament Championship game to claim their 10th conference tournament title in program history.
Adrian opened the GL6 Tournament with a first-round bye after securing the No. 1 seed by winning the GL6 Regular Season. The Bulldogs then faced Purdue Northwest in the semifinal, dominating play in a 6-1 victory. Caleb Minns and Sebastian Smith each scored twice, while Eli Reimer and Luke Marley also found the back of the net.
In Saturday night's championship game, the Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal by Smith. Blake Wideman extended the advantage to 2-0 in the second period. Smith added his second goal of the game in the third to push the lead to 3-0 before Calvin answered with a shorthanded tally to make it 3-1. With the Knights' net empty late in regulation, Dylan Gajewski sealed the victory with an empty-net goal to secure the 4-1 win.
Gajewski also recorded an assist for a two-point night, while Reimer added two assists. Peyton Trzaska earned the start in goal and finished with 15 saves. The championship game marked the 170th career appearance for Sebastian Smith, setting a new program record at Adrian.
The Bulldogs return home on Thursday, February 26, when they host Indiana Tech at 7:30 p.m. in their final game before the ACHA Men's Division 1 National Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri.
