ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Adrian College women's wrestling team turned in a strong showing at the D3 National Invitational, placing eighth out of 30 teams with 74 total points in a highly competitive national field.Â
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Mia Gaetjens at 180 pounds, who finished as the national runner-up and scored 21.5 team points. Gaetjens advanced to the championship bout with three straight falls and a technical fall in the semifinals before dropping a decision in the title match to Augustana's Maryam Ndiaye.
Carleigh Czerneski also delivered a standout performance at 117 pounds, earning a third-place finish and contributing 19.5 points to the team total. Czerneski opened the tournament with back-to-back falls in under a minute, added a shutout decision in the quarterfinals, and rebounded from a semifinal loss with two decisive victories to secure a spot on the podium.
At 145 pounds, Zionah Gardner placed fifth after a deep consolation run that included four falls and a forfeit win. Gardner's resilience through the back side of the bracket resulted in 17.5 team points and capped off her tournament with a decision victory in the fifth-place match.
Several other Bulldogs added valuable points throughout the weekend. Sophia Renteria (124) opened her tournament with a technical fall and finished with five points. Mason Harsch (131) picked up two early wins, including a technical fall and a decision, to score 3.5 points. Angelica Steffy (138) recorded two technical falls on her way to 4.5 points, while Taylor Cutler (145) tallied two quick falls in consolation action to contribute 5.5 points.
Additional appearances came from Alexis Baumgartner (103), Jayna McClory (138), Maryah Elliott (160), and Raven Aldridge (180), each gaining valuable national-level experience against a deep field.
With multiple podium finishes and strong depth across the lineup, Adrian's eighth-place finish at the D3 National Invitational marked another step forward for the Bulldogs on the national stage.
The Bulldog women's wrestling squad will be back in action February 21 and 22 at the NCWWC Regional Championship in Tiffin, Ohio.Â
