ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College NCSA D1 softball team opened up their spring season falling in both ends of a doubleheader against Glen Oaks Community College, dropping a tightly contested opener, 3-2, before falling 13-3 in the second game.
In game one, Adrian battled throughout but came up just short despite a late push at the plate. After being held scoreless through four innings, the Bulldogs broke through in the fifth. Gianna Evans sparked the rally with a single, while Hayden Cutler followed with a base hit and later scored. Elizabeth Grady reached on an error to bring home another run, and Kaitlyn Fry added an RBI on a sacrifice to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Evans led the offense with two hits, while Cutler added a hit and a run scored. In the circle, Grady went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while Fry provided 1.2 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.
Game two saw Adrian strike first, taking an early 1-0 lead in the opening inning behind an RBI single from Greer Simpson that scored Evans. The Bulldogs answered again in the third inning, capitalizing on aggressive baserunning and a Sara Kozel RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
However, Glen Oaks used a series of multi-run innings to pull away, highlighted by a big sixth inning and two home runs from Zarycki. Adrian totaled 10 hits in the contest, with Evans and Elizabeth Grady each recording two hits, while Kaitlyn Fry also added a pair of hits.
Simpson finished with an RBI, and Kozel drove in a run, but the Bulldogs were unable to keep pace as Glen Oaks capitalized on scoring opportunities late.
Adrian will look to bounce back in its next outing as the Bulldogs will host Washtenaw Community College on Friday, March 27th for a doubleheader. First pitch will be thrown at 4:00 PM.Â
