Coach Martin Mathis joins the Adrian College football staff in the spring 2022 as the Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers/Special Teams Coordinator. Mathis has spent the last 30 years coaching football at multiple levels including NCAA Division I FBS, Division II, NAIA, High School, and Arena Football.
Mathis spent four years playing Football and Basketball at Purcell Marian in Ohio where he was All State and won a State Championship in Football. He also played 3 years of Baseball at Purcell.
Mathis spent four years playing college football for the University of Minnesota (Division I FBS) as a linebacker while also being on the special team’s units He then spent two years at Minnesota as a linebacker’s student assistant coach. After that he went on to coach youth football before becoming the Defensive Coordinator at Holy Cross High School in Kentucky where they went to the playoffs his final year. He then spent a year coaching at Purcell Marian High School in Ohio where he graduated.
Coach Mathis then spent time at Rose-Hulman where he was the Defensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, and Weight and Conditioning Coordinator. After seven years of losing seasons at Rose-Hulman before Mathis had gotten there, they then had two .500 seasons where the papers called it a miracle.
In 2005, while at Rose-Hulman Mathis coached the Cincinnati Marshals in the NIFL Arena League where the team went on to the 3rd round of the playoffs.
After helping turn around Rose-Hulman with Ted Karras as the Head Coach and Mathis as the Defensive Coordinator, Mathis followed Ted Karras to Marian College NAIA which was later changed to Marian University. He then spent six seasons at Marian University as the Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator/Recruiting Coordinator where three off the teams posted records of 12-1, 12-1, and 10-3 during his time from 2006-2012 while going to the playoffs three times. In 2011 Marian’s Defense gave up only 7.4 PPG which was the lowest on all levels (Div 1 FBS, Div 1 FCS, Div II, Div III, and NAIA). At Marian, Coach Mathis helped win two Conference Championships and the NAIA National Championship in 2012.
Coach Mathis became the Head Coach at Bethel College KS (NAIA) before the 2012 NAIA playoffs started at Marian University. After winning the National Championship four weeks later, he helped turn around Bethel College while breaking almost every offensive record in 2013. Coach Mathis then took off for Walsh University (Division II) for one season.
He later coached at four different high schools in Ohio;Â Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy HS (Linebackers), Villa Angela-St. Joseph HS (Defensive Coordinator), Turpin HS (Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers), and Withrow University High School (Defensive Coordinator). During this time Coach Mathis had two 10-0 seasons and two conference championships. During this time Coach Mathis was also the Linebackers Coach at Alderson Broaddus University.
 In 2021 Coach Mathis was the Defensive Coordinator at Kentucky Christian University they came in 1st in passing defense this past season in NAIA. (Football Scoop) (Yards Per. Attempt Allowed min. 300 attempts)  Â
