ADRIAN, Mich. - The second game of a weekend series can usually play mind games with a team that won big the night before. The Adrian College men's ice hockey club ran into a more competitive Lawrence University team on Saturday night and came away with a 4-3 win over the Vikings improving to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the MCHA.
The story was the play of captain Adam Krug who tallied his first hat trick with the Bulldogs including the game-winning goal in the third period. Krug broke a 1-1 tie in the second period with an even strength goal at the 1:17 mark on assists from Eric Miller and Shawn Skelly. The trio hooked up again on a magnificent play in front of the net as Miller did a spin and laced a backhand pass to a streaking Krug who buried it in the back of the net just 34 seconds later giving Adrian a 3-1 cushion.
Krug scored the game-winner at the 13:24 mark of the third as he redirected a shot off the stick of Quinn Waller for his sixth goal of the season. The even strength tally was also assisted by Skelly. Billy Siers kept the deficit to one with a goal at even strength at the 15:40 mark of the final period. His first goal of the year was assisted by Marc Howe and Josh Peterson.
Skelly ended the game with three assists, three shots on goal and a +2 rating. Miller contributed two assists, four shots on goal and a +2 rating. Bryan Scott earned his first win between the pipes making 18 saves including seven in the third period. Adrian and Lawrence both struggled on the power play going a combined 2-of-12 with each team taking seven shots on goal. Adrian was whistled for seven minor penalties compared to five for Lawrence. Adrian outshot the Vikings, 39-21, as Sam Kuzyk led Adrian with six shots on goal and also scored the first goal on the power play in the first period at the 12:21 mark, his second of the campaign.
