UTICA, N.Y. -
The Adrian College women's hockey team was stunned on the road on Sunday afternoon by a five goal third period by the Utica College Pioneers.
In a back-and-forth game which included four lead changes, the Bulldogs grabbed the early lead on a Steph Dimini goal 5:44 into the contest. The Pioneers knotted the game at 1-1 five minutes later on a Jodie Galluzzi power play goal.
In the second period, the Bulldogs struck again when Dana Funkenhauser tallied her first goal of the season with less than two minutes left in the frame.
Utica tied the game at 2-2 just seconds into the third period on a Kelly Bills goal. Dimini got in on the scoring again, putting home her second goal of the game on a power play 2:50 into the third period to once again give the Bulldogs the lead. Once again, however, the Pioneers were quick to respond, tying the game up yet again under a minute after Dimini's goal. Utica then grabbed their first lead of the contest at the 6:19 mark.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, Steph Dimini netted her third goal of the game for the hat trick to tie the game at 4-4. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Pioneers struck two more times within three minutes of Dimini's hat trick to take the game by a 6-4 margin.
The Bulldogs return to Arrington Ice Arena next weekend when they host the University of Wisconsin - Superior for a Friday/Saturday series. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
*NOTE: After this weekend's series against Utica, Stacey Kempson and Steph Dimini rank atop women's NCAA D-III hockey in some statistical categories. Kempson currently leads all of Division III hockey in points (11) and assists (7) for the season while Dimini is second in overall goals scored (5) and is leading in power play goals scored (3).
