The Adrian College women's hockey team broke open a 3-3 game in the third period, outscoring the Concordia-Moorhead College Cobbers 2-1 to take the 5-4 victory.
In a back-and-forth game, the Bulldogs grabbed the 1-0 lead on a Keegan Castrillo goal midway through the first period. The Cobbers quickly tied the game at 1-1 on a Jen Bextermueller goal at 10:17. She added her second goal of the game before the end of the period, giving the Cobbers the 2-1 lead at intermission.
AC responded in the second period with a Stacey Kempson goal at 3:54 into the frame, tying the game at 2-2. The Cobbers regained the lead at 15:47 on an Amanda Matchett goal. The Bulldogs once again notted the game up when Jessica Grubbs netted her third goal of the season.
The Bulldogs controlled much of the third period, which ultimately proved to be the decisive frame of the game. Stacey Kempson scored her second goal of the game and fifth goal of the season just over two minutes into the period to give the Bulldogs the 4-3 edge. After the Cobbers pulled their goalie with just under two minutes left in the contest, the Bulldogs got the game winner when Steph Dimini scored an empty net goal, which was also her first goal of the season. The Cobbers came back with a late-game surge, getting a goal with six seconds left in the game. The Bulldogs held onto the 5-4 lead for the final few seconds to take the win, moving their record to 5-1 on the season.
Ashley Kavanagh picked up the win in goal for the Bulldogs, moving her record to 2-0 on the season and registering 15 saves in the victory.
The Bulldogs will next travel to Utica College in Utica, N.Y. for a weekend series on November 10 and 11.
