ADRIAN, Mich. -
The Adrian College women's hockey team upset #5 Gustavus Adolphus in overtime on Friday night at Arrington Ice Arena by the final score of 2-1. The Bulldogs improve their overall record to 4-1 early in the season. The win tonight marks the largest upset in school history for the women's team.
The action picked up in the second period as each team remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes of the game. The Golden Gustie's scored first off a power play goal from Mollie Carroll. Mari Gunderson was credited with an assist on the play. Gustavus Adolphus took the 1-0 lead into the third period.
Adrian was able to tie the game at 1-1 after a goal from Stacey Kempson only 42 seconds into the third period. Kempson now has a team-high five goals. Freshman Brooke Zaleski recorded the assist.
The Bulldogs had a golden opportunity fall out of their reach as they were unable to capitalize on a 5-3 advantage late in the third period. Adrian had a shot to win the game with under five seconds left in the third period. Olivia Rork stole the puck and moved down the ice with only the goalie to beat. Rork shot the puck with less than a second on the clock but Danielle Justice made her 17th save of the night to send the game into overtime.
Rork would get revenge in overtime by scoring her first goal of the season at the 1:30 mark to give Adrian the 2-1 victory. Jessica Grubbs and Jodi Myers each earned an assist on the game-winning goal.
Game two of the series between Adrian and Gustavus Adolphus will be tomorrow at 2 p.m.
