The eight-game winning streak for the women's basketball team came to an end on Monday night at Olivet College with a 71-66 defeat. The Bulldogs matched the longest winning streak since the 1992-93 season and are currently 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA.
Olivet came out shooting the ball very well as Adrian only had two one-point leads in the early stages of the first half. The final Adrian lead came at 11-10 with 14:37 left in the first half. The Comets turned a two-point lead at 25-23 into a 43-27 lead in the span of six minutes towards the end of the first half. Adrian held tight and cut the lead to 46-38 at intermission. Olivet shot 54.1 percent in the first half and scored 30 points in the paint.
Adrian played stifling defense in the second half holding Olivet to 24 percent shooting which allowed them to get back in the game quickly. Liz Hafeli's three-pointer at 12:38 made the score 50-48 and a pair of her free throws later cut the lead to one with 10:28 to go. Olivet went on a 7-0 spurt to push the lead back to eight with 8:10 remaining and the Bulldogs used another burst of energy to crawl back to within three points at 66-63 with 4:21 left. Freshman Katie Ross hit a big three to tie the game at 66-66 with 1:56 to play but Adrian was held scoreless for the rest of the contest. Anita Stamps had a chance to tie the game with a pair of made free throws with nine seconds left but missed both which led to a fouling situation.
Stamps scored a team-high 19 points with 15 coming in the first half. She also had five rebounds and two assists in 35 minutes. Megan Bouwens had a strong second half and finished with her first double-double of the season collecting 15 points and 10 boards in 26 minutes. Ross added nine points off the bench and also had five rebounds and five assists in 25 minutes. Adrian (8-2, 2-1 MIAA) will next be in action on January 3 against Anderson.
