Stamps Hits Two Free Throws for 54-52 Win over Albion in MIAA Opener

Dec. 6, 2008

Final Stats

ADRIAN, Mich. - The women's basketball team has won six in a row and did so without making a field goal for the final 8:45 of the game in a 54-52 victory over Albion on Saturday afternoon. The game came down to junior Anita Stamps stepping to the free throw line with nine seconds left and making both, avenging a pair of misses on her previous trip to the charity stripe. Lindsey Davis drove the lane with one second left for Albion but her shot never got above the rim securing a 1-0 MIAA record for the Bulldogs.

Adrian lead 31-30 at halftime as there were eight lead changes and three ties in a very competitive 20 minutes. The Bulldogs began to set the tone in the first 10 minutes of the second half. After Albion took a 32-31 lead, the Bulldogs went on a 15-4 run to take a 10-point lead with 12:36 remaining. Albion cut the lead to 49-43 with 9:42 to go but Adrian seemed to make enough plays to hold off the Britons. That assurance went away as Albion picked up their defensive intensity and held Adrian without a field after the 8:45 mark. Adrian's defense kept them close as Albion cut the lead further to 52-50 with 2:07 left on a triple by Nicole Dennis.

Lindsey Sowa made a nice layup with an even better assist by Melissa Shaw to tie the game at 52-52 with 1:10 to play. Both teams had two chances to break the tie with Albion having the best chance to secure a lead. Brittany Kemperman went to the free throw line after Megan Bouwens fouled out for the Bulldogs with 17 seconds to go. Kemperman missed both free throws and Jenn Headley grabbed the rebound. After two timeouts, Adrian's Stamps was fouled by Keigan Edwards driving to the basket setting up the winning points.

Bouwens scored 12 points and grabbed five boards before fouling out. Jennifer Perrin led all scorers with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. She led the team with four assists and recorded one steal in 35 minutes. Stamps finished with five points, three boards and three assists in 20 minutes. Adrian shot 42.6 percent (20-of-47) from the floor and held Albion to 37.3 percent (19-of-51) from the field.
