For the first time in six tries, the Bulldog baseball team got the better of Emory University with a 12-11 win in the season opener over the fifth-ranked Eagles from Chappell Park. Adrian jumped out with an 8-1 lead after four and a half innings and had to withstand a fierce Emory rally before shutting the door with the tying-run on second base in the bottom of the ninth. The Bulldogs struck for four runs in the top of the fourth as Bobby Rickstad drove in two runs with a two-out single and Todd Meyers also drove in a run in the frame with a single.
Adrian got four more runs in the top of the fifth after two men were out highlighted by a Meyers' double that scored two and a Kris Powell single that scored Meyers from third. Emory scored nine runs in the final three innings to make things interesting. Emory came to bat down 12-8 in the final frame and stranded the tying-run at second as Andrew Cohn flew out to center with Frank Pfister standing on second after an RBI double scored two Eagles. Adrian Woods recorded the final out on the mound going 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. Rickstad got the start and pitched well with four hits allowed in four innings. He allowed one earned run and struck out two in the no-decision. Adam Stone earned the win in relief (1-0) going two innings and allowing three hits and one earned run.
Leadoff man Meyers went 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. He also helped lead the defense at shortstop as the Bulldogs went errorless in their first game compared to four errors by the Eagles (4-2). Rickstad went 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI. Adrian pounded out 16 hits against the Emory staff as five players had multi-hit games for Adrian. Alexander Younce scored three runs for the Bulldogs and went 2-for-4 with a walk.
