KALAMAZOO, Mich. -
The Adrian women's basketball team used solid frontcourt play without one of the team's leading scorers in a 69-67 road win at Kalamazoo College. Ashley McClarren sat this one out due to injury but her teammates picked up the slack. Sophomore center Kim Olech had her finest game of the year setting a season-high with 19 points and tying a season-high with 14 rebounds. Olech was 8-of-14 from the field and 3-of-4 from the foul line not to mention she recorded three blocks, three assists and two steals in 35 minutes.
The contest featured seven ties and 12 lead changes including five ties and four lead changes in the second half. Adrian led 41-37 at the halftime break and shot 53.1 percent in the opening 20 minutes. Kalamazoo tightened their defense in the second half giving themselves a chance in the end. Adrian shot just 34.5 percent in the second half and were 1-of-6 from the arc.
The senior leadership of Nichole Roose played a huge role down the stretch as she calmly knocked down a pair of free throws with 12 seconds on the clock to give Adrian the two-point win. Roose scored 10 points and was 4-of-4 at the line while chipping in three assists and a block in 33 minutes. Kalamazoo had two shots to tie in the final seven seconds but Therese Demres missed a layup and Kirsten Strawn misfired on a jumper with Megan Bouwens securing the final rebound. Bouwens got the start in place of McClarren and responded with 11 points and seven boards in 30 minutes.
The Bulldogs are now 7-12 overall and currently are tied for fifth in the MIAA at 5-6. The ladies will host Alma College this Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
