Jan. 30, 2009

Final Stats

ADRIAN, Mich. - The special teams units for both teams came into the game with a lot to be proud of and on Friday night it was the Adrian College power play that got the best of the Marian penalty kill in a 3-1 win for the Bulldogs. Adrian (18-1-1, 15-0 MCHA) now has 30 points in the MCHA standings and Marian is a distant second with 21 points. The Bulldogs have five regular season games on their schedule and with a win tomorrow afternoon over Marian can wrap up back-to-back MCHA regular season titles.

Sophomore forward Shawn Skelly got Adrian on the board with a pair of first period power play goals. The early stages of the game was very physical as Marian tried to rattle the Bulldogs. It seemed to work for a little while but Skelly scored at 15:29 on the second power play chance of the game for Adrian with assists from Eric Miller and Quinn Waller. Adrian got another man-advantage chance late in the first and Skelly's 22nd goal of the season at 18:11 made it 2-0 after 20 minutes. Miller and Adam Krug were given helpers on the play.

Marian weathered the storm in the second period and outshot Adrian, 12-9, as sophomore goaltender Brad Fogal was tested between the pipes to keep his team in the lead. The Sabres broke into the scoring column at 10:09 of the second as Lane Boswell scored his 11th goal of the year at even strength on a backhand shot off a deflection under the pads of Fogal. Bobby Roseland was given an assist on the goal.

The third period saw Adrian scored their third power play goal of the game at 49 seconds as Waller ripped home his second goal of the season from the right point with assists from Miller and Krug. Adrian outshot Marian, 42-25, and Jason Jadczak played well in net for Marian with 39 saves including a couple of nice stops in the third as Adrian tried to extend their lead.

Marian finished 0-for-9 on the power play including a 5-on-3 for 1:02 in the second period which gave Adrian a spark. The Bulldogs were 32.1 percent to lead Division III coming into the game and were 3-for-6 on 14 shots. Fogal made 24 saves to earn his 17th win of the season and 37th of his career. Skelly now has 49 points this season and 123 points in 49 career games. The two teams will faceoff tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. from the Arrington Ice Arena. Adrian has now won 30 straight MCHA regular season games and are on a 17-game winning streak.
