Adrian Downs Albion, 52-46, in MIAA Opener

ADRIAN, Mich. - The women's basketball team improved to 3-1 and won their MIAA opener on Wednesday night as they defeated Albion by the final of 52-46. The Bulldogs have played their first four games in the city of Adrian and also improved to 3-0 at home.

The stat line of the night in a tight game was free throw shooting. Adrian went 24-of-27 (88.9%) from the charity stripe while Albion was 10-of-15 (66.7%). Jennifer Perrin had the magic touch for Adrian as she went 11-of-11 from the foul line including making all nine of her tries in the second half.

This defensive slugfest saw six ties and five lead changes. Albion led 10-4 at the 12:56 mark of the first half but Adrian kept putting up defensive stops to get back in the game. Adrian took their first lead of the game at 21-20 with 2:08 left in the half as Katie Ross hit a three-pointer. Albion took a 24-22 lead into the locker room as Albion shot 29.4 percent in the first half. Adrian made five field goals and 11 free throws with one triple in the first 20 minutes.

The game see-sawed between one possession for most of the second half as both teams had an answer for the other. With the game tied at 35-35 with 7:26 left, Adrian got the much-needed run to separate themselves from the Britons. Perrin had a three-point play at the 5:21 mark and Ashley McClarren followed with a pair of free throws to give Adrian a 42-37 lead.

Albion got within three at 44-41 with 2:32 left, but Elysia Norris made a tough driving layup at the 2:03 mark to give the Bulldogs another five-point lead. Perrin was fouled three times in the final 35 seconds and made all six attempts at the line to seal it for the Bulldogs.

Perrin led all scorers with 18 points and also had five rebounds and two steals in 38 minutes. Norris finished with nine points and four rebounds in 28 minutes. Jenn Headley cleaned the glass off the bench with 10 boards including six offensive caroms in 22 minutes. Adrian shot just 26 percent for the contest but held Albion to 29.3 percent shooting including 7-of-24 in the second half.
