The first half of action on Wednesday night at Trine was something that needed to be forgotten quickly as Adrian trailed 33-16 after 20 minutes. The good news was that the next 20 minutes was some of the best basketball played by Adrian as they fell short, 62-59, from Hershey Hall.
The Bulldogs trailed from the start in this one as the Thunder started the game on a 14-7 run in the first seven minutes. Adrian's cold shooting and turnovers in the first half put them in a major hole going into the locker room. The Bulldogs had 14 miscues in the first half and shot just 25.9 percent from the field.
Adrian came out of the intermission with a purpose and quickly cut the lead down to single digits with 10:18 to play after a couple of Jennifer Perrin free throws. Adrian scored 14 points in the first 3:31 of the second half showing they would be a threat in the second half. Jenny Carlson's three-point play at the 7:42 mark cut the lead down to four and set up a good stretch run.
Anita Stamps' jumper at the 5:47 mark made the score 47-45 which was the closest deficit since the first minutes of the first half. Trine scored nine of the next 11 points and regained a comfortable lead at 56-47 with 3:10 to go. Adrian trailed by nine with 1:19 left before mounting a furious late-minute comeback attempt. AC scored seven straight points in a 30-second span to cut the lead to 59-57 with 34 seconds to play.
The last four possessions saw each team split a pair of free throws and Perrin shot a triple at the buzzer which hit the rim short as time expired. Perrin finished with eight points and 11 rebounds. Megan Bouwens recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards. She was 5-of-13 from the field and 5-of-8 at the foul line. Ashley McClarren added 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting with four rebounds. Adrian shot 46.7 percent in the second half and were 12-of-16 at the foul line. Stamps led all scorers with 19 points and was 4-of-6 from the arc. The Bulldogs (13-6, 6-5 MIAA) fall into fourth place in the league standings while Trine claims third after their three-point win.
