Jan. 30, 2010

Final Stats

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The new year has been kind to the Adrian College women's hockey team as they have played much better hockey. The Bulldogs continued their fine play since the beginning of January with a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at UW-Superior. This month, the team has posted a 5-1-2 record and positioned themselves near the top of the NCHA.

Adrian (10-9-2, 8-3-1 NCHA) completed a weekend sweep of the Yellow Jackets by scoring a pair of first period goals and then buckling down on defense for the final 40 minutes. Ashley Martin took a two-minute tripping minor early in the first which allowed the Bulldogs to score a power play goal. Nicky Futers scored 30 seconds into the power play at 3:26 with assists from Danielle Maludy and Dana Funkenhauser. It was Futers fourth goal of the season.

Adrian went back on the power play at the 10:00 mark of the first and could not score but kept the puck in their offensive zone. The Bulldogs scored 12 seconds after the penalty expired at 12:12 as Ashley Aiken scored her second goal of the year with an assist from Shana Davis.

The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to one at 19:27 on the power play as Alysha Drouin went to the box for a two-minute cross checking minor at 19:03. Shana Katz scored the goal with assists from Brittany Dunkel and Jodi Holland.

The Adrian defense closed the door in the final two periods as UW-Superior had two power plays in the second, but managed just one shot on goal in the four minutes. Adrian had two power plays in the third and managed two shots on goal during the first minor.

UW-Superior decided to pull goaltender Melissa Kunzelman twice in the final 1:44 as neither team had a shot on goal during that time frame. UW-Superior outshot Adrian, 23-21, as Dana Timm made 22 saves for AC. Jessica Grubbs led the team with six shots on goal. The Bulldogs will host Marian (2-14, 1-8 NCHA) at Arrington Ice Arena next Saturday and Sunday in their final regular-season home games.
