Box Score OBERLIN, Ohio – The Adrian College women's basketball team took control of the game early on Friday against Oberlin College as they took the lead 4-3 and never lost the lead taking the victory 65-60. The Bulldogs moved to 3-7 on the season with the victory.
The first half opened with the Bulldogs jumping out early with a 7-0 run to lead 9-3 about five minutes into the game. Oberlin battled back to tie it at 11 apiece. Adrian ran through the Yeowomen finishing the first half on a 21-13 run to lead by 10 at 37-27. The Bulldogs finished the half shooting 45 percent from the floor, 41 percent from behind the arc and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Adrian continued their run early into the second half pushing their lead to 13 at the 7:17 mark. However, Oberlin would cut the Bulldog lead to one after the Yeowomen went on a 12-0 run. That would be the closest Oberlin would get as junior Jenn Headley (Hicksville, Ohio/Hicksville) hit both of her free throws with 16 seconds left in the game to push the lead to five and seal the Bulldogs victory.
Adrian had statistically one of their best games of the season. Along with their season-high 65 points, the Bulldogs blocked nine shots. The ladies also tied a season high making 19 free throws and shooting 40 percent from downtown.
Headley led the Bulldogs with a season-high 15 points while pulling down eight boards. Headley also went 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Fellow junior Kellee Wonders (Pittsford, Mich./Hudson) tied a single-game school record with five blocked shots. Wonders becomes the seventh player in school history to rack up five swats in a game, the most recent was Jenny Carlson at Albion on January 28, 2009. Wonders also added 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Sophomore Rachael Walker (Warrensville Hts., Ohio/John F. Kennedy) also got in on the rebounding action grabbing eight boards as well, while adding three points. Sophomore Kayla Galecka (Ovid, Mich./Ovid-Elsie) dropped in nine points while dishing out five assists and pulling down four rebounds. The freshman tandem of Senneca Scott (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) and LaQwana Dockery (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) scored six and five points respectively. Scott also picked up five rebounds.
With the win, the Bulldogs have won back-to-back games for the first time since February of last season.
The Bulldogs will return to action on January 5, 2011 as they travel to Trine University for a 7:30 p.m. start.
