Sophomore goaltender Meghan Smerecki needed to make just four saves in her first start of the season as the Bulldogs posted a 3-0 shutout of Marian University on Sunday afternoon. Adrian had a monstrous 57-4 shot on goal margin as the Bulldogs faced little resistant against a Sabre team that is 2-17 overall and 1-11 in the NCHA.
Smerecki had not played a minute this season and earned her first shutout making two saves in the first and one save a piece in the second and third. It is the fewest shots on goal allowed by the Bulldogs in program history.
Alysha Drouin gave Adrian a 1-0 lead at 11:42 of the first on her second goal of the season with assists from Brooke Zaleski and Danielle Maludy. Adrian had a 19-2 edge in shots after 20 minutes.
Olivia Rork made it 2-0 at 6:19 of the second for her fourth goal of the season with helpers from Dana Funkenhauser and Kelly Salis. Zaleski closed the book on this mismatch with a short-handed goal at 16:52 of the second unassisted for her ninth tally of the season.
Adrian held Marian to 0-for-6 on the power play while the Sabres recorded twice as many penalty minutes (28) as the Bulldogs (14). Zaleski scored her first short-handed goal of the season and she leads the team with 25 points this season.
Adrian is now 12-9-2 overall and 10-3-1 in the NCHA. They moved into first place in the league standings as Lake Forest was idle this weekend. Adrian has 21 points while the Foresters have 20. Adrian has two more conference games next weekend at UW-Stevens Point. Lake Forest has four conference games left with a pair against Concordia (Wis.) and UW-River Falls. Adrian has won four straight games and are unbeaten in their last seven.
