The women's bowling team opened their season on Sept. 25
with the first conference tournament (AHIBC) in Dayton, Ohio. The
"A" team finished 11th and the
"B" team finished 16th. Wright
State's "A" team won the tournament with
Davenport's "A" team taking second. The
"A" team drew a tough opening match facing off against
Wright State's "A" team. Despite shooting an 850,
their highest team game of the day they lost to Wright
State's 920. Next the team faced Michigan State and bowled
another strong score of 825 only to lose by one pin to Michigan
State's 826. The "A" team would go onto win their
next two matches defeating Grand Valley State and Ohio State. The
"A" team would enter the baker portion sitting in
eighth place overall. During the baker game portion of the
tournament, the "A" team was down after two games and
fired off five strikes in a row for a 222 in the final game to
defeat Davenport's "A" Team 534-510. The
"B" team got off to a great start winning their first
two matches defeating University of Louisville 775-710 and Notre
Dame College's "C" Team 683-613.
The "A" team was led by junior Nicole Corstange
finishing 23rd overall with a 169.6 average and team
high game of 201, while freshman Chelsea Essenmacher finished
30th overall averaging 165.4. Senior Jess Shovan
led the "B" team finishing 39th overall with
a 160.6 average.
"Overall it was a good first tournament for both
teams," said head coach Jody Fetterhoff. "The
conference tournaments are extremely long with competition starting
at noon and lasting until 9 pm. Both teams bowled well during the
five team games and then struggled during the 15 baker games as the
lanes began to dry out. It's hard to predict how lane
conditions will breakdown and the PBA Shark Pattern is a very long
and heavy oil pattern which normally holds up pretty well. It was a
great learning experience for both teams and we have a good three
weeks to prepare for our next tournament on October 16-17."
