The women's bowling team competed in Beavercreek, Ohio this past weekend bowling in the Orange & Black Classic. Looking to improve upon last year's 11th place finish, the team struggled on the first day of the competition and found themselves in 11th place, 189 pins out of 8th. The team knew they needed to bowl well during the second day in order to make the top eight and qualify for the championship round. With only 16 baker games left, Adrian cut the deficit down to 102 pins heading into the final set of four baker games. The team got hot in the first game stringing seven strikes in a row finishing with a 240 game. They would shoot an 837 for the set averaging over a 209 for the final four games propelling them from the 11th spot all the way into the 8th spot giving them a final spot into the championship round.
In the opening match, Adrian would face the #1 seed Lindenwood University who were the runner's up in last year's national championship. Lindenwood would start off strong taking the first game of the best of five single-elimination baker matches shooting a 204 to Adrian's 166. Adrian would win the next game with a 193 game tying it up 1-1. The next two games would come down to the final frames with Lindenwood prevailing winning games 3 and 4, 154-139 and 196-193. Lindenwood would then go on to win the tournament defeating host Pikeville University in the final round, while Adrian would finish 8th overall out of 23 teams.
Junior Kristen Marcis continued to bowl well leading the team with a 184 average for six games finishing in 30th place out of 144 bowlers. During the baker portion of the tournament the whole team stepped up and everyone contributed shooting the fifth highest baker set of the tournament with a 2903, averaging over a 181 for 16 games.
"Freshmen Katie Harms provided a big spark coming in as a sub and really set the tone the last eight baker games," said head coach Jody Fetterhoff. "As she gets more experience I see her contributing a lot more throughout the season. The team really proved this weekend that they can hold their own with some of the best teams in the nation and I look for them to continue this trend as we compete in the UNOH Classic this weekend in Lima, Ohio."
