Adrian Comes Back to Top Concordia 80-78

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's basketball team showed once again that it can overcome adversity with a comeback 80-78 victory over Concordia University (Mich.) today (Nov. 26) inside of Merillat Gymnasium. After shooting 39.3% from the floor in the first half, the Bulldogs came out in the second shooting a remarkable 61.3% en route to their fourth-straight win.

Still without two starters due to injury, the Bulldogs (4-1) were down by as much as nine points (27-36) with 5:23 left in the first half. Adrian regrouped and mustered an 8-0 run to go into intermission down by one point.

The Cardinals (4-4) went on a 10-4 run after halftime to go up 46-39 following a three-pointer by John Schaeffer. Adrian continued to battle and took its first lead since early in the first half when junior Brad Whitby drained a three, putting the Bulldogs up 59-57 with 8:52 on the clock. Classmate Delano Collins set up the play with the assist.

Adrian would not lose the lead for the duration of game and led by as much as 11 points with 2:36 on the clock which was topped off by a three-pointer courtesy of junior Cody Barnes. Junior Sean Gallant earned the assist on the play.

With 19 seconds left in regulation, Adrian up 78-76, Collins was clutch from the charity stripe with two free throws made, giving Adrian a four-point lead. Concordia made it interesting with a layup by Schaeffer with seven seconds left to cut Adrian's lead into half. After a missed one-and-one Adrian free throw, the Cardinals were unable to get a shot off as time expired.

Leading on offense for the Bulldogs was freshman Adam Meier who led four in double figures with a career-high 19 points. Meier went 8-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Following Meier was Collins with a career-high 15 points. Also scoring in double-figures was Gallant with 14, while Whitby and Barnes each had 12 points.

As a whole, Adrian out-rebounded Concordia 33-23. Adrian was led by Gallant who had nine rebounds. Also contributing was Meier and Whitby with six and five boards, respectively.

For the game, Concordia out-shot Adrian 57.4%-50.8% from the floor. Behind the arc, the Cardinals were 10-for-18 (55.6%) and the Bulldogs were 5-for-13 (38.5%).

Adrian is on the road for its next game as they travel to St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday (Nov. 29) at 7:00 PM.
