MILWAUKEE, Wis. - A day after wrapping up its fourth straight MCHA regular season title, the men's hockey team did not let up as they picked up win number 21 on the road with a 3-1 decision at MSOE. For the second straight game, it was tough defense and a strong penalty kill unit that limited the Raiders to just one goal. Brad Fogal made 27 saves in net for the Bulldogs and they stopped all eight power play chances for MSOE. During the weekend, Adrian killed all 12 penalties and went 3-of-12 themselves including 2-of-7 this afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, Shawn Skelly put Adrian ahead 1-0 at the 3:53 mark on a 4-on-4 goal assisted by Eric Miller and Mike Dahlinger. It was Skelly's 16th goal of the season and 97th of his brilliant career. The Bulldogs struck again just 48 seconds later on the power play as Sam Kuzyk lit the lamp with assists from Dahlinger and Josh Cousineau. It was Kuzyk's eighth goal of the season and fifth power play goal. It was also his 56th career goal and 23rd career power play goal.
The second period scoring was not over as MSOE cut the lead to 2-1 at 8:51 as Nick Gorup scored at even strength with an assist from Bradley Tierney. The period ended with Adrian regaining a two-goal lead at 18:52 on the power play as Cousineau scored his fifth goal of the season and third power play goal with assists from Miller and Skelly.
The third period went without a goal as Adrian killed off two minor penalties. Adrian outshot MSOE, 30-28, for the game. Adrian has posted a 58-1-1 record in the last three regular seasons in the MCHA and will now prepare for the Harris Cup on March 5 for a semifinal contest against a team to be determined. Marian University won the North Division and will have a first-round bye as well as the Bulldogs. MSOE will host Lake Forest in a two-game mini series and Lawrence will host Northland in the other two-game mini series next weekend. The winners of those series will complete the four-team field for the Harris Cup.
