Box Score LAKE FOREST, Ill. – It was a night to celebrate for the Adrian College women's hockey team as they clinched a spot in the conference playoffs with a 3-2 victory over Lake Forest. With the win, Adrian improves to 12-6-3 on the year and 10-3-3 in the conference.
Neither team could score in the first period, but once the second period rolled around the goals came quickly. Just five minutes into the period junior Kelly Salis (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) netted her seventh goal of the season unassisted. Lake Forest would counter with goals at 10:12 by Rosy Fujimoto and 12:11 on the power play by Jessica Dare to take a 2-1 lead going into the final period.
Salis, one of two team captains, took it upon herself to lead the Bulldogs on the ice. Salis tied the game with a power play goal just 1:21 into the final frame with assists from freshman Nina Laurie (Palatine, Ill.) and sophomore Ashley Gniewek (Southgate, Mich.). Just 2:13 later it was again Salis who drove through the Foresters defense into the slot, and fired a shot low and inside the right post to score what would be the game-winner to go along with her first career hat trick.
Emily Michelin (Highland, Mich.), a freshman, played solid in goal knocking away 27 Forester shots.
Adrian was 1-for-3 on the power play while the Foresters were 1-for-4. The Bulldogs out-shot Lake Forest 36-29 in the game, including a 16-6 advantage in the final period.
Salis becomes the seventh player in school history to score a hat trick and becomes the first defenseman to ever accomplish the feat. Salis has now scored in five of the last six games, netting eight goals in the span and is now tied for second on the team with nine goals.
Adrian will close out the home portion of their season as they host Wisconsin-Eau Claire beginning Friday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m.
