ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The women's bowling team season ended this weekend as they placed 10th at the USBC Sectional Qualifier. The team vastly improved upon last year's 14th place finish, knocking down 973 more pins. They shot a 10,817 for 64 baker games which is an average of 169.02, bowling four pins higher than their season average for baker games. The team also rolled a season-best baker game shooting a 235 in game 24. Senior Jessica Shovan also shot a new program high-game during the singles competition held on Friday, shooting a 242. Freshman Jessica Stamper had the best showing, finishing 22nd averaging a 186.33 for six games.
During the team competition, Adrian was very consistent. For the first three blocks of 16 games they shot a 2,645, 2,640, and a 2,600 for an average of 164.27 for 48 games. They made a run the last block firing off a 2,932 for 16 games which is an average of 183.25 per game and had a chance to move up two places in the standings. In the tenth game of the block, the team came two frames shy of shooting a 300 game. The team fired off ten strikes in the game but failed to convert two spares in the 2nd and 6th frames and ended with a 233 game.
"Very few teams have ever shot a 300 baker game during competition let alone at Sectionals, so to come that close with such a young team is really extraordinary," said head coach Jody Fetterhoff. "The team bowled phenomenal in the last block, had they bowled that way for the first three blocks we would've finished fourth and qualified for Nationals."
Four other NCAA teams also competed in the Allentown Sectional and the team went 2-3 over the weekend. Adrian's two wins came against #25 ranked SUNY-IT shooting 668-633 and 712-634. Their first loss came at the hands of #8-ranked Kutztown losing 697-765. The other two losses were to #13-ranked Adelphi (633-710) and Long Island University (752-775). They ended the season going 10-14 against other NCAA teams.
"With all of the starters returning next season the future of this program in very bright," said Fetterhoff. "The team will have another year of experience and I look to bring in a strong freshman class next year that will add even more depth to the team."
