Box Score Alma, Mich. – When your last four games have ended in 1-0 final scores, you don't mind if you're the team with the one. For the fifth time in as many starts, the Adrian men's soccer team (3-8, 5-12) played a 1-0 game. This time it was against Alma College (3-7-1, 7-9-1), but more importantly, Adrian did not have the one, Saturday afternoon, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.
"This is another difficult loss for us to swallow," said head men's soccer coach Chris LeFevre.
Alma got on the board quickly with a goal from Chad Buitentiuis just over three minutes into the contest from the top of the 18.
It wasn't for lack of chances that Bulldogs could not find the equalizer. With the Scots' goalkeeper on the line, Adrian missed on a breakaway. With less than three minutes left to play, another potential game-tying shot rang off the post and with a rebound opportunity available, Alma was able to clear the ball.
"It comes down to these types of moments that we have every game where we need our guys to step up, compose themselves and score," said an obviously frustrated LeFevre. "We had great set piece opportunities and failed to capitalize."
The Bulldogs had six corner kicks in the first half with some quality scoring chances being generated by them. Other opportunities were generated when Alma out-fouled Adrian by a more than two-to-one margin (9-4) and the Scots also received two yellow cards (to Adrian's none).
Of the last five matches, that have ended 1-0, Adrian is 2-3 in those contests. Two of the last three regular season games are at home beginning with the team's next matchup against Olivet on Wednesday, October 24th, beginning at 7 p.m.
