Box Score LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The men's hockey team (5-0, 5-0) beat Lake Forest College (1-5, 1-4), 6-2, Friday night in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Southern Division action.
The MCHA's only undefeated team and nationally-ranked No. 5 Bulldogs (USCHO.com) took a 3-0 lead to the locker room after the first period and never looked back.
Duston Hebebrand and Kevin Balas each scored before the game was two minutes old and led the team with a plus-4 on the night.
Hebebrand's four-point night (1 goal, 3 assists) and a three-point performance each from Balas (2 goals, 1 assist) and Ryan Lowe (1 goal, 2 assists) led the Bulldogs in a penalty-filled game that included 24 infractions by both teams for 59 combined minutes.
MCHA Defensive Player of the Week Scott Shackell was perfect 5-on-5, but did allow two power play goals before giving way to James Hamby mid-way through the second period. Shackell finished the night with 18 saves, while Hamby allowed no goals with 13 stops.
Team leading goal scorer Shaquille Merasty scored his seventh goal with eight minutes left in the opening frame to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Shawn Courtney and Josh Ranalli would earn assists on Merasty's game-winning goal.
After the Foresters converted twice on the power play in the second period to draw within a goal at 3-2, Andrew Dovey doubled the Bulldogs lead to 4-2 with under a minute to go in the middle stanza. Zach Wilson and Pat George assisted on the goal, with the latter registering his first collegiate point.
Lowe and Balas would add insurance goals in the game's final five minutes to ice the win.
Shelby Gray led the team with six of the team's 36 shots, as Adrian outshot the Foresters by three.
Both teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. in the second of four regular season matchups.
