Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – Having spent almost an entire month idle, the men's hockey team needed some time to shake the rust off. It took the team more than two periods to show signs of the form that took them to a 9-0 start.
The Bulldogs scored three goals in the game's final 1:15, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Pointers, as Adrian suffered its first loss of the season, 7-4, in a non-conference game Saturday night.
Adrian (9-1) outscored the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (8-5-1), 4-2, in the final period; but could not dig themselves out of a 5-0 hole after two periods.
The third period and late-scoring rally could provide momentum when the same two teams go at it again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Bulldogs entered the game as one of only two unbeaten and untied Division III teams.
The Pointers got a pair of goals in the first period and scored three second-period goals to build a huge 5-0 lead, however, the Bulldogs responded early and late in the final period.
Josh Ranalli notched his sixth of the season from Shelby Gray and Ryan Gieseler just 1:17 into the third to make it a 5-1 game.
Then in the final 1:15 of the period, Lukas Ciotti, Gray, and Sam Nyberg would close out the scoring.
Ciotti's fourth goal of the season came at 18:45 from Justin Basso. Twenty-three seconds later, Gray, who led the team with five shots on the night, would get his sixth goal of the year from Gieseler and Zach Graham. Twenty-seven seconds after that, Nyberg would tally his second goal of the campaign from Ciotti and Ryan Lowe.
The three goals in the final 75 seconds looked more like the team that lead the nation in goals per game, going into the game.
James Hamby, Scott Shackell and Mitch Laflamme would all see action in goal and stop a combined 32 shots between them.
