Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. - With the game and season in doubt, junior Ashley Gniewek decided to take things in her own hands, netting an overtime goal to boost the Bulldogs past Lake Forest 3-2. Gniewek's overtime goal was her second of the game and came off a pass from senior Kelly Salis at the 1:42 mark in overtime off of a power play.
The Bulldogs started the game scoring two goals in the first period and looking very much in control. Gniewek scored the first goal from senior Brooke Zaleski and sophomore Rebecca Hampton. Later in the period, senior Olivia Rork added a power play goal from freshman Hannah McGowan, giving Rork her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
In the second period, the Foresters began to battle back. Jenn Caldwell netted a goal to make the score 2-1 as the Bulldogs went into the third period holding a one goal lead. The game was tied after Stephanie Slinde scored for Lake Forest at the 11:29 mark in the third. The two teams would then go into overtime with the score tied 2-2.
The Bulldogs got their chance when a Lake Forest penalty was called just 21 seconds into overtime, giving Adrian the advantage. Adrian then had six unsuccessful shots, five which were saved by goalie Jenna Brankin for the Foresters. The seventh shot proved to be the lucky one as Salis found Gniewek for the game-winner.
On the game, the Bulldogs out-shot the Foresters 43-28. Senior Brittany Zeches earned her 10th win of the season between the pipes, saving 26 shots for the Bulldogs.
With the win, the Bulldogs finish the season on a nine-game winning streak as they look ahead to the NCHA Conference Tournament. Adrian will be the 3 seed in the tournament and will host a two-game mini-series to be played Feb. 24-26th. The Bulldogs will play host to Wis. Stevens-Point in the series, who Adrian swept 7-3 and 6-4 on Feb. 4-5 at Stevens-Point. If the two teams split the four points in the first two games, a 20 minute mini-game will be played to determine the winner of the series, and what team advances to the semi-final round. Times and dates of the games have yet to be announced.
