Round One of Top 25 Battle Goes to Adrian 15-7 over Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - The 12th-ranked Bulldog baseball team defeated its third top 20 opponent of the season with a 15-7 win at 19th-ranked Thomas More College in a nine-inning affair on Saturday, March 17.

Senior pitcher Jason Fryman got plenty of run support as Adrian improved to 7-1 overall this season. Fryman went six innings and allowed seven hits and two earned runs improving to 3-0 on the young season. He also walked two and struck out three Saints. Freshman Eric Schmidt threw two relief innings and allowed three hits and three earned runs. Sophomore Brent Greenwood finished up with one inning of work allowing no hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The Bulldogs scored in six of their nine at-bats including four runs in the second and three more in the third to build a 7-3 lead after three innings. Andrew DeLuca had a two-RBI double in the second inning while Garrett Green hammered a three-run homer in the third for his first of the season.

Adrian added three more runs in the fifth as Jamey Sackett had a sacrifice fly and Sam Fischer hit a two-out, two-run homer for his first of the season. Fischer also had a RBI triple in the second inning. Mitch Stefanski continued the home run derby with a two-run blast in the sixth inning for the Bulldogs who built a 14-7 lead after seven innings.

The Bulldogs finished the scoring with an unearned run in the eighth inning. Green scored after a Michael Herzog single and multiple-base error by the right fielder. Adrian finished with 14 hits off six different Saint hurlers. Aaron Carmack drew the start and took the loss allowing two earned runs and five total runs in two innings.

Fischer was just a double short of the cycle going 3-for-5 with a run and four runs driven in at the leadoff spot. Kyle Strawn scored three times and reached base three times with two singles and a walk. Green scored four times and collected four RBI. DeLuca went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI in the ninth spot of the order.

The two teams will square off again tomorrow at 1:00 PM to conclude their weekend series.
