LINCOLN, Neb. - Chelsea Essenmacher wore the name of Adrian College into the USBC Intercollegiate Singles for the first time in school history on Tuesday and did herself and the College proud with a top eight finish at Sun Valley Lanes.
Essenmacher needed to qualify early in the day to establish a seed heading into head-to-head three-game total pinfall series against other competitors. She finished seventh out of 16 competitors with a total pinfall of 1,158. Essenmacher rolled her highest game of 223 in the fourth game of qualifying and rolled a 201 in game five to move up the ladder.
Essenmacher received a bye in the first round and square off with 15th-seed Jordeen Koizumi of Arizona State in the second round. Essenmacher trailed 192-171 after game one but then took control with a 210-187 edge in game two setting up a good third game. Essenmacher saved her best for last as she rolled a 255 compared to a 182 for Koizumi advancing with a 636-561 win.
Awaiting Essenmacher in the third round (quarterfinals) was second-seeded Katelyn Zwiefelhofer of Wisconsin-Whitewater, a fellow Division III school. Zwiefelhofer stumbled out of the gate getting two byes and looking a little rusty. Essenmacher took advantage and took game one 214-183. Zwiefelhofer showed why she is one of the best in the country but rolling a 289 in game two while Essenmacher struggled to a 180. That large margin was huge as Essenmacher needed to win game three by more than 78 pins to advance to the televised national semifinals. Essenmacher threw a 181 compared to a 185 for her counterpart as Zwiefelhofer moved on to the semifinals with a 657-575 win.
