ADRIAN, Mich. – The men's tennis team (2-0) won every set in singles and doubles play, except one, in dominating Defiance College, 9-0, Thursday in front of one of Adrian's bigger tennis crowds. Both Jordan Verbauwhede and Michael Mertz remained unblemished in No. 1 doubles play, having won every game since the start of the split season.
In singles play, everyone but Ryan Delacy won in straight sets, but Delacy stayed focused after a first set loss (5-7) to take the final two sets (6-2, 10-6). "Ryan Delacy battled back after dropping the first set and finished his match extremely strong to pick up the win at No. 2 singles. I have to give him a lot of credit in his mental game, as he never got down and picked up a big win," said head coach Adam Albertsen.
At No. 1 singles, Verbauwhede won 6-1, 6-1; at No.3 singles, Mertz won 6-0, 6-3; at No. 4 singles, Cameron Hamilton won 6-3, 6-1; at No.5 singles, Alex Amos won 6-1, 6-1; and at No. 6 singles, Troy Gargrave won 6-0, 6-1. In No. 2 doubles, Hamilton and Amos won 8-2; and at No. 3 doubles, Delacy and Spencer Georgetti won 8-3.
"The men came out very strong today, they were pumped up to play a home match in front of friends and family. All the doubles teams looked a little crisper after getting that first match under their belt and showed improvement," said Albertsen.
The team's next match is at the University of St. Francis (Ind.), Saturday, Sept. 15th at noon.
