Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – Ryan McCarthy had a goal and an assist to power the men's soccer team (3-7, 1-3) to a shutout victory over visiting Alma College (5-5, 1-3), 2-0, Wednesday night, and move the team to within three points of third place and a playoff position in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).
"The team put together a complete 90-minute game tonight. We've been in every game, with five of our losses decided by a lone goal, it was nice to see us control the game," said head coach Chris LeFevre.
Freshman goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulous made some key stops in recording his first collegiate shutout.
Almost 33 minutes into the contest, Nick Minshall scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season. On the play, the Scots were pushing forward when Adrian won the ball and was able to find McCarthy in the middle, who was able to play the ball to Minshall. Minshall controlled it and was able to volley it past their goalkeeper.
Just over two minutes later and with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half, Adrian played the ball along the left side to Richie Blevins, who was also able to find McCarthy in the middle. McCarthy struck the ball from 30-plus yards out with such force that it appeared to still be gaining velocity as it whistled past Alma's goalkeeper. It was McCarthy's second tally of the season.
"McCarthy struck the ball perfectly for what could be best described as a highlight-reel goal," said LeFevre.
Although Alma came into the contest with a better than .500 record, Adrian dominated in almost every facet, including shots, and now find themselves tied with the Scots in the league standings.
Adrian will next travel to Olivet for an afternoon showdown on Saturday, Sept. 29th at 1:00 p.m. in another conference matchup.
