Box Score LAKE FOREST, IL. – The women's hockey team (14-5, 9-5) scored just 23 seconds into the game, but could not overcome the Lake Forest power play, as the Foresters (9-2-4, 6-1-4) converted twice to beat Adrian, 2-1, in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play Sunday afternoon.
Danielle Smith notched her 12th of the season from Kelsey Kusch and Alix Vallee to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead that they took to the first intermission.
Adrian was called for one infraction in the second period and the Foresters took advantage and converted to tie the game at 1 apiece.
Of the five third period penalties, four were called against the Bulldogs and they had to play the majority of the final stanza shorthanded. The nail in the coffin for Adrian was when they were cited for a major infraction, which the Foresters took advantage of by scoring the game-winning goal during that penalty.
Brittany Zeches was solid in net and turned aside 24 shots. Had it not been for the Lake Forest power play, Zeches would have been perfect on the night.
Lake Forest outshot Adrian, 26-21.
The red-hot Foresters have now won their seventh-straight game and are now just two points back of the Bulldogs in the conference standings.
The Bulldogs will return home next weekend to face the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, who are currently tied for third with Lake Forest in the NCHA.
Adrian, who is undefeated at home, will play the first game Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a Saturday rematch at 2 p.m.
It will be the last regular season home games for the Bulldogs this season.
