Zeches posts back-to-back shutouts in shuffle off to Buffalo

Box Score

BUFFALO, NY- When your starting goaltender averages a shutout every other game, then chances are your team will be winning a lot of games.

Adrian goaltender Brittany Zeches has started 14 games this season for the Bulldogs and leads all Division III netminders in shutouts with seven.

For the second time in as many days, Zeches thwarted every opposition shot in leading the No. 10 Bulldogs (12-3) over Buffalo State (4-8-1), 5-0, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Buffalo State College Ice Arena.

Adrian scored three late second period goals in a 3:07 span to up their lead to 4-0. The fourth Bulldogs goal came with just 11 seconds left in the middle stanza and ultimately chased the Bengals' starting goalie from the net.

Leading the way for Adrian offensively with a pair of goals each were Sarah Connelly and Courtney Millar. Lauren Turner, who added three assists moved up to second in that category nationally with 11. Turner would assist on the first two and last Bulldog tallies.

Connelly got the team's first two goals, while Millar scored the team's final two goals.

Connelly would net the game-winner in the first period just over three minutes into the game from Turner and Hannah McGowan. She would score her second of the night and ninth of the season over 33 minutes later toward the tail end of the second period that would spark the late second period rally with three goals in just over three minutes on goals by Connelly, Devyn Fitzhenry, and Millar.

Millar would score again in the third period, but this time on the Bengals' relief netminder.

Fitzhenry's two-point night (one goal, one assist) would give her 14 on the season and move her to second nationally in Division III rookie scoring, while Kelsey Kusch added an assist on Fitzhenry's goal that allowed her to remain atop all Division III scorers.

Adrian outshot Buffalo State, 31-13, in a game where 19 combined penalties were called but no special-team goals were scored.

Zeches improved her save percentage to 94.5 percent and moved into eighth nationally in that category. Her 343 saves on the year are more than 100 more than any other netminder in the top-10, and she has more than double the saves of five of the seven goalies in front of her.

After completing a seven-game road stand that began back in mid-November, the lady Bulldogs will finally return home this weekend where they are undefeated. The University of Wisconsin-Superior will face Adrian Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association action.
