Men's NCAA Ice Hockey

Bulldogs dodge blue night with 3-1 win

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. – Chris Leone broke a 1-1 tie late in the third period to power the Adrian College men's hockey team over visiting Geneseo State, 3-1, Tuesday night in a non-conference game at the Arrington Ice Arena.

Leone led the Bulldogs with a goal and an assist, while Dustin Hebebrand added two assists.

On the winning goal, Hebebrand had the puck behind the Knights' net but his centering pass missed everyone and ended up at the right point on Leone's stick. The defenseman wasted no time in unleashing a high shot that found the back of the net.

"It felt pretty good," said Leone about his third goal of the season.

"I could see that their goalie had flopped to the ice and the only way to shoot it was to go upstairs. I just took a quick slap shot and the goalie didn't have a chance to save it."

With the win, the NCAA Division III No. 7 Bulldogs improved their record to 12-1.

Geneseo State (8-5-1) entered the game on a five-game winning streak and undefeated in their last four road games. The Blue Knights have been on the cusp of breaking into the national rankings- receiving votes the past four polls.

Just under three minutes into the contest, Justin Basso went hard to the net on a partial breakaway and ended up colliding with and injuring the starting Blue Knights goaltender.

Their backup goaltender had been in the game for exactly one minute when the Bulldogs struck.

Just under four minutes into the first, Zach Graham slid a pass deep in the zone to Josh Ranalli, who redirected the puck above Horrigan's right shoulder from directly in front of the net to give Adrian a 1-0 lead. Leone also was credited with an assist on Ranalli's ninth goal of the season.

Almost ten minutes later, the Blue Knights would tie the score at 1-1 on the power play.

Neither team would score in the second period as both teams played the third period close to the vest, with Adrian outshooting Geneseo 8-6.

Play opened up after Leone put Adrian up, 2-1, with just under four minutes to play.

Less than two minutes after Leone's goal, Geneseo would go on the power play and make it a 6-on-4 advantage by pulling their goaltender with just over a minute left in the contest.

Hebebrand would gain control of the puck in the Geneseo end and take the play toward the empty net- only to hit the side of the net from the goal line. The puck caromed to Andrew Dovey, who followed up on the play and deposited the loose puck to seal the win for Adrian.

Hebebrand and Ryan Gieseler would earn assists on Dovey's fifth goal of the year, as the team captain would register a two-point night.

Adrian goaltender James Hamby had 31 saves and improved his record to 8-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs outshot the Blue Knights, 32-29.

After more than a month away from conference action, Adrian will take to the road for a weekend matchup with Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Friday's and Saturday's games will both start at 8 p.m. (ET).
